What The Bible Actually Says About Fear
People love to say that "do not fear" appears 365 times in the Bible. One for every day of the year.
It's a nice idea. It's also not exactly true. The number varies depending on the translation. But the point still stands. God talks about fear a lot.
The question is why.
If God just wanted us to stop being afraid, he could have made us that way. He's God. He could have wired fear out of the human brain entirely. But he didn't.
And I think that tells us something important. Fear is not the problem. What you do with it is.
Here's the verse I want you to sit with today.
"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." - Isaiah 41:10
Read it again slowly.
Notice the structure. God doesn't just say "don't be afraid" and leave you there. He gives you the reason. Every single time he tells us not to fear, he follows it with a promise.
Do not fear, because I am with you.
Do not be dismayed, because I am your God.
I will strengthen you.
I will help you.
I will uphold you.
The command and the comfort are inseparable. One without the other doesn't work.
That's why "just stop being afraid" doesn't work. Because it's not the full verse. The full verse is "stop being afraid because of who I am and what I will do."
Fear shrinks when you shift your focus from the thing you're afraid of to the One who's with you in it.
I'm not saying you'll never feel afraid again. You will. I will. Fear is part of being human in a broken world. But the Christian life isn't about never feeling afraid. It's about who you turn to when you do.
If the first thing you do when fear shows up is Google it, scroll it, numb it, or control it, you're going to stay stuck. If the first thing you do is open His word and remind yourself of who's holding you, something shifts.
The verses don't magically make fear disappear. But they do something more important. They put the fear in its proper place. Underneath God. Not above him.
YOUR ONE THING FOR TODAY
Pick one fear you've been carrying this week. Just one. Then speak Isaiah 41:10 over it out loud. Not once. Three times. Pay attention to the words that come after "do not fear." Let them land.
Then, if the fear comes back later today, do it again. Speak the verse. Not the fear.
A PRAYER FOR TODAY
God, I'm tired of letting fear run the show. I'm tired of carrying things You've already said You'd carry with me. Today I'm choosing to speak Your word over my fear instead of letting my fear speak louder than You. Remind me that You are with me. That You will strengthen me. That You will uphold me. I don't need to be unafraid. I just need to remember who's with me when I am. Amen.
God bless you, my friend.
