The Lie Fear Tells You At Night
Fear is loudest when you're tired.
There's a reason for that.
During the day, you're distracted. You've got work, conversations, tasks, noise. Your brain is occupied. But at night, when everything goes quiet and the distractions disappear, fear has the whole stage to itself.
And it puts on a performance.
It doesn't announce itself as fear. That's the trick. It disguises itself as logic. It says things like "I'm just being realistic" and "you need to think about this" and "what if this actually happens?" It wraps itself in the language of reason so you treat it like truth instead of what it actually is.
A lie.
Not always a lie about the facts. Sometimes the situation really is difficult. Sometimes the bills really are stacking up. Sometimes the relationship really is strained. But the lie isn't about the circumstances. The lie is about the conclusion.
Fear takes a real situation and adds a false ending.
"Your finances are tight" becomes "you're going to lose everything."
"That conversation went badly" becomes "they'll never forgive you."
"You're struggling in your faith" becomes "God has given up on you."
The situation might be real. The conclusion is the lie.
"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." - 2 Timothy 1:7
A sound mind. That's the bit that matters here.
Fear doesn't give you a sound mind. It gives you a spinning mind. A catastrophising mind. A mind that takes one problem and multiplies it into forty between midnight and 3am.
If the voice in your head is spinning worst-case scenarios and convincing you that everything is falling apart, that's not wisdom. That's not discernment. That's not God prompting you to take action.
That's fear wearing a mask.
Here's how I've learned to tell the difference.
God's voice brings clarity. Fear brings confusion.
God's voice brings conviction with peace. Fear brings conviction with panic.
God's voice says "here's the next step." Fear says "there are no steps, it's too late, give up."
The next time you're lying in bed and the thoughts start spiralling, try this. Don't argue with them. Don't try to logic your way out. Just say one thing out loud. "God has not given me a spirit of fear."
Say it again. And again.
Not because the words are magic. But because you're choosing to speak truth into a room full of lies. And lies can't survive in a room where truth is being spoken out loud.
The fear will try to come back. It always does. But each time you speak that verse, it gets a little quieter. Not because you're strong enough to shut it up. But because the God behind those words is.
YOUR ONE THING FOR TODAY
Write 2 Timothy 1:7 on a piece of paper or a sticky note and put it on your bedside table. Tonight, if the voice comes, don't reach for your phone. Reach for the verse. Read it out loud.
It will feel strange the first time. Do it anyway.
A PRAYER FOR TODAY
God, I'm tired of being lied to. I'm tired of lying in the dark believing things about my life that You never said. Tonight, guard my mind. When the fear comes, remind me that it's not from You. Give me the courage to speak Your truth into the silence instead of listening to the noise. You have not given me a spirit of fear. You've given me power, love, and a sound mind. Help me to walk in that. Starting tonight. Amen.
God bless you, my friend.
