Surrender: The Grip You Did Not Know You Had
You can usually tell someone is gripping something before they can.
The sideways comment about the thing they claim not to care about. The 3am mental loop they can't explain. The visible flinch when someone brings up a specific topic. The way their body tightens when a certain person walks into the room. All of it, underneath, is a grip they're not aware they're holding.
Most of our grips are invisible to us.
Today, how to spot the specific things you've been gripping without noticing, and why awareness is the first act of surrender.
Here's the paradox most of us never resolve.
We say we've surrendered things to God. We prayed about them. We handed them over. We moved on. And then, weeks or months later, we notice we're still thinking about them. Still planning around them. Still trying to control the outcome in small subtle ways we don't quite admit are control.
The surrender didn't actually happen. We just said it did.
That's not hypocrisy. That's just how human grips work. They're often beneath the level of what we can see about ourselves. And the first act of real surrender isn't the handing over. It's the honest noticing of what you've been holding.
"Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." - Psalm 139:23-24
David writes this at the end of a long Psalm about how deeply God knows him. He has just acknowledged that God sees him better than he sees himself. Then he does something strange. He asks God to search him.
Why would he need to ask that if God already knows?
Because David needs the search to be revealed to him. He already knows God sees it. He is asking God to show him what God is already seeing. The search isn't for God's benefit. It's for David's awareness.
That's the prayer of surrender. "Show me what I'm holding that I don't know I'm holding."
Here are the specific grips to watch for in your own life this week.
The grip of control. Any area where you have been quietly manoeuvring the outcome. A relationship you keep "nudging" in a certain direction. A career path you have been subtly steering while telling yourself you are "being wise."
The grip of outcome. Any area where your peace is tied to a specific result. The medical test coming back clear. The job offer landing. The person coming back. If your mood crashes when the outcome shifts, that's a grip.
The grip of identity. Any area where you have attached your sense of worth to something. The role at church. The job title. The compliments. The number of followers. Loss of any of these feels like personal annihilation, which means you were holding it tighter than you knew.
The grip of resentment. Any area where you have been quietly rehearsing someone else's offence against you. The resentment itself is a grip. Not holding the person. Holding the right to be hurt by them.
The grip of the old self. Any area where you have been identifying with who you used to be rather than who God is calling you to become. The grip of your past, often disguised as being "honest about yourself."
Read that list again, slowly. Not to feel bad. To notice.
Notice is the whole exercise today.
Surrender cannot happen until the grip has been named. And the grip cannot be named until you have deliberately asked God to show it to you, because left to your own instincts, you will see everything in your life except what you are gripping.
YOUR ONE THING FOR TODAY
Pray David's prayer. Out loud if you can. "Search me, O God. Show me what I am holding that I don't know I am holding." Then sit quietly for two minutes afterwards. Do not strain to think. Let him show you.
Whatever rises first is almost certainly the right thing to notice.
A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Father, I have been saying I surrendered things when really I just stopped talking about them. Show me today what I have been gripping without knowing. Make the invisible visible. I will not run from what you show me. Amen.
God bless you, my friend.
