Jesus said one thing about provision that most Christians can quote and almost none of us actually live.

He pointed at the birds.

Six words that cut through almost every anxious conversation we have ever had with ourselves about money, work, security, and the future. He pointed at the birds, and he said: look.

Today, what Jesus actually meant when he said consider the birds, and why most of us have been missing the whole point of it.

Read the verse.

*“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” - Matthew 6:26*

Notice what Jesus is not saying.

He is not saying don’t work. He is not saying don’t plan. He is not saying never think about tomorrow. Birds work. They forage all day. They build nests. They raise their young. They expend enormous energy to stay alive.

What Jesus is saying is more specific. The birds do not worry.

They work hard, but they don’t carry the weight of their own survival. They do their part, and they trust that the world around them, designed by the same God who made them, will contain what they need.

And it does. Every day.

If you’ve ever stopped to watch birds on a telephone wire, you’ll have noticed something. They don’t look stressed. They don’t look like they’re calculating whether tomorrow’s food will arrive. They sit. They sing. They fly off when it’s time. Then they come back.

That is the posture Jesus is holding up as the model for a Christian relationship with provision.

Not laziness. Not passivity. Not refusing to plan. Just the absence of the specific weight of carrying your own survival as if it depended entirely on you.

Because here is the honest truth most of us walk around not fully believing: your survival has never depended entirely on you. Not once. Not for a single day of your life.

Every breath you’ve ever taken has been given to you.
Every meal you’ve ever eaten has arrived through a chain of events you didn’t orchestrate.
Every bed you’ve ever slept in has been there because something upstream of you made it possible.

If God had stopped sustaining the universe at any moment of any day, you would not be reading this right now.

We don’t like this truth because it threatens our sense of control. But it’s the whole starting point of the Christian life around money and provision.

You are a bird on a wire. You work. You forage. You plan sensibly. But the weight of making it all work has never been on you. It’s been on someone bigger.

And he has fed you every single day. Even on the days you forgot to thank him.

**YOUR ONE THING FOR TODAY**

Look at a bird today. A real one. Out of a window, on a walk, anywhere. Just stop and watch it for 60 seconds. Notice what it is not doing. Notice what you do without noticing.

Then say thank you to God for a specific provision from this morning. Breakfast. The kettle. The lights. Something small and specific.

**A PRAYER FOR TODAY**

Father, I have been carrying the weight of my own provision as if it depended on me. Forgive me for that quiet unbelief. Teach me the posture of the birds. Help me work hard without carrying what you have never asked me to carry. Thank you for every meal, every bed, every breath you have given me without me even noticing. Amen.

God bless you, my friend.
